Universidad de Cádiz

The University of Cadiz was founded in 1978. It may be considered as a young university, although many of its colleges, especially the Faculty of Medicine, already existed with a degree of independence prior to the foundation of the University itself. It has 19.903 students and 1,691 lecturers and offers degrees in Medicine, Law, History, Languages, Linguistics, Economics and Business studies, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Organisation Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Ship-building Engineering, and Marine Sciences, etc. It also offers undergraduate programs, above all in the technical areas. The faculties and schools of the University are located in four different campuses in the cities of Cadiz, Puerto Real, Jerez and Algeciras. There are 169 research teams working in diverse areas which are generally related to the geographical location of Cadiz (the province is the southernmost point of Europe) and to the industrial activity of its neighbouring area. There are four clearly defined geographical areas that concentrate the province’s industries: the Bay of Algeciras (petrochemical industry, oil refining, and iron and steel industry), the Bay of Cadiz (ship-yards and marine aquaculture), and the area of Jerez (agricultural and food industry and especially “Sherry”) and the area of Ubrique in the mountains of Cadiz (leather manufactures). Probably due to these factors, our most fruitful research fields are marine aquaculture, coastal ecosystems, coastal dynamics, environment, materials or oenology.
