De Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek stimuleert wetenschappelijk onderzoek van topkwaliteit aan Nederlandse universiteiten en instituten. Kwaliteitsbevordering en vernieuwing van onderzoek staan centraal. NWO ontvangt jaarlijks omstreeks € 400 miljoen van de overheid. Het leeuwendeel komt van het ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschappen. Ook andere ministeries dragen bij. NWO financiert daarmee ruim 4300 arbeidsplaatsen die aan onderzoek doen. Maatschappijbrede kennisoverdracht en toepassing van behaalde resultaten vormen een belangrijke doelstelling. (Dit houdt niet bij de landsgrenzen op: net als wetenschappelijke onderzoekers zelf is NWO nadrukkelijk internationaal georiënteerd.) NWO richt zich op alle in Nederland beoefende wetenschapsgebieden, van natuurkunde tot criminologie en van informatietechnologie tot minderhedenonderzoek. NWO, the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, promotes scientific research at Dutch universities and research institutes and seeks to raise the quality of that research. Innovation is a key element in this endeavour. NWO also promotes the dissemination and use of research results achieved wholly or partly with NWO support. NWO pursues an active information policy aimed both at researchers and at the media, politicians and the public at large. To help it achieve these aims NWO receives funding of around EUR 450 million (roughly NLG 1 billion) from the government. Most of this funding comes from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, though other ministries also contribute. NWO targets all fields of research activity pursued in the Netherlands, from physics to theology and from information technology to research on ethnic minorities.
