Four young European scientists named “Leaders in the Lab” for advances in blood cancer diagnosis, Alzheimer’s detection and patient safety

[Brussels, 2 November 2026]
Four early-career scientists from Ireland, Türkiye, Italy and the Republic of Moldova recognised by the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EFLM) for their contribution and leadership roles ahead of European Laboratory Day on 5 November.

Shortlisted from 50 nominations across 26 countries were:
  • Galina Coltuclu, Physician in Laboratory Medicine at the Institute of Oncology, Chișinău, for her work building Moldova’s first routine flow cytometry service for blood cancers, while still a resident. Since 2022 it has analysed samples from around 1,000 children and adults.
  • Federico Angelo Cazzaniga, Health Researcher at Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Neurologico Carlo Besta, Milan, for his work identifying biomarkers in in tear and nasal swabs to identify Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
  • Hikmet Can Çubukçu, Associate Professor of Medical Biochemistry at Sincan Training and Research Hospital, Ankara, for developing quality-control web tools for laboratories that cannot afford commercial software, including QC Constellation and the EFLM-hosted APS (Analytical Performance Specifications) Calculator. [i]He chairs the EFLM’s Committee on Laboratory Error Database, which is developing a European resource for ISO 15189 risk analysis, building on his severity-of-harm study of 195 tests.[ii]
  • Stephanie Yates, the first medical laboratory scientist awarded Ireland’s National HSCP Innovation Fellowship for her contribution in supporting frontline staff to develop and test ideas that improve services. Her call for laboratory professionals to help inform healthcare design comes as Ireland begins a ten-year reform of its laboratory services.

Testimonials

For well over a decade, in my capacity as a researcher, broadcaster, and producer, I have relied heavily on Alphagalileo.
All of my work trips have been planned around stories that I've found on this site.
The under embargo section allows us to plan ahead and the news releases enable us to find key experts.
Going through the tailored daily updates is the best way to start the day. It's such a critical service for me and many of my colleagues.
Koula Bouloukos, Senior manager, Editorial & Production Underknown
We have used AlphaGalileo since its foundation but frankly we need it more than ever now to ensure our research news is heard across Europe, Asia and North America. As one of the UK’s leading research universities we want to continue to work with other outstanding researchers in Europe. AlphaGalileo helps us to continue to bring our research story to them and the rest of the world.
Peter Dunn, Director of Press and Media Relations at the University of Warwick
AlphaGalileo has helped us more than double our reach at SciDev.Net. The service has enabled our journalists around the world to reach the mainstream media with articles about the impact of science on people in low- and middle-income countries, leading to big increases in the number of SciDev.Net articles that have been republished.
