New publications present the Smart Transformer Toolbox: a suite of digital tools for more energy-efficient buildings

The two new resources, developed under the EU-funded BuildON project, address different audiences. The infopack offers an overview of the toolbox: what it does, how it works and the results achieved so far across the project's pilot sites. The accompanying factsheet takes a more technical angle: it presents the toolbox as a modular, vendor-neutral platform, sets out its four integrated layers - interoperability, MAPO (Monitor - Assess -Predict - Optimise) analytics, digital twin and human interfaces – and looks ahead to deployment beyond the pilots, making it a useful reference for specialist and expert readers.

The Smart Transformer Toolbox (STT) brings together AI-powered analytics, digital building logbooks, digital twins and decision-support applications into a single ecosystem that helps building owners, facility managers and occupants monitor and optimise energy performance across a building's lifecycle. It has been designed for real-world use in different climates, building typologies and operational contexts. It has now been deployed and validated across six pilot buildings in five European countries.
Both resources draw on the first, qualitative phase of BuildON's impact assessment, which confirmed that the toolbox is operational, interoperable and mature across all pilot sites, a solid foundation for the final quantitative evaluation of energy, comfort and flexibility benefits still to come.
The toolbox is built to support every building stakeholder: end-user applications provide real-time monitoring and recommendations, facility-management platforms support operational oversight and anomaly detection, and the SMURF decision-support tool generates renovation scenarios ranked by cost-effectiveness and expected smartness gains. Thanks to its modular architecture, interoperability framework, standardised APIs and SRI-based methodology, the STT can be adapted and replicated in buildings well beyond the project's pilots.
