Le Bénin face aux méfaits d’une forte contamination aux mycotoxines

[YAOUNDE, SciDev.Net] Une étude menée au Bénin révèle que les céréales vendues sur les marchés locaux contiennent des mycotoxines, des substances toxiques produites par des champignons microscopiques qui se développent sur les cultures et pendant le stockage.

Selon Mohamed Haddad, directeur de recherche à l’Institut de recherche pour le développement(IRD) et coauteur de l’étude, plusieurs travaux menés en Afrique de l’Ouest suggéraient déjà des niveaux élevés de contamination des aliments par les mycotoxines, mais les données disponibles pour le Bénin restaient limitées et fragmentaires.

Or, relève-t-il, le maïs, l’arachide et le riz constituent des aliments de base consommés quotidiennement par une grande partie de la population.

« Nous avons donc souhaité évaluer le niveau réel d’exposition des consommateurs béninois à ces contaminants et, mieux, comprendre quels champignons étaient responsables de leur présence dans les aliments », déclare-t-il à SciDev.Net.
