Aston University awards honorary doctorate to Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust medical director

  • A consultant interventional cardiologist, Professor Khan received his honorary doctorate at an Aston University graduation ceremony on 20 July

Aston University has awarded an honorary doctorate to the director of medical education at Sandwell and West Birmingham (SWBH) NHS Trust, Professor Jawad Khan.

The honour, which was awarded at a graduation ceremony at Eastside Rooms in Birmingham on Monday 20 July, presided over by Aston University Chancellor Dr Jason Wouhra, recognises Professor Khan’s significant contribution to medical education and to cardiology.

Professor Khan grew up on a Dudley council estate. He went on to study medicine at St George’s Hospital Medical School, University of London, qualifying with distinction, gaining honours and a national scholarship from the Wolfson Foundation in Biomedical Sciences.

He became a consultant interventional cardiologist in Birmingham and completed a master’s in medical education, specialising in simulation-based training. He has taught internationally in developing health systems and contributed to charity medical missions in Africa. As well as his role at SWBH NHS Trust, Professor Khan is on the General Medical Council Medical Licensing Assessment Examination Board and is an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians.

Professor Khan said: “I was delighted to receive a DSc in recognition of my work, especially from a local University. Initially I studied in London however I am proud that I returned to the West Midlands and have contributed to advancing cardiac care across our region.”
