The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is pleased to announce the election of Prof. Oron Shagrir as its next Rector, following a vote by the University Senate.

Prof. Shagrir currently serves as the Vice-President for International Affairs. He previously held key academic and administrative roles, including Head of the Department of Cognitive Sciences and Vice Rector.

Prof. Shagrir holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science and a master’s degree in the history and philosophy of science, both from the Hebrew University, as well as a Ph.D. in philosophy and cognitive science from the University of California, San Diego.
As Vice-President for International Affairs Prof. Shagrir has led the University through major challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the October 7 terror attack, and the ensuing Iron Swords War. Under his leadership, the International Office has expanded international degree programs, built a global student exchange network with over 100 partner institutions, and developed strategic collaborations with leading institutions worldwide.
Prof. Shagrir will assume office in October 2025, succeeding Prof. Tamir Sheafer, who was recently elected as the next President of the University.
Prof. Asher Cohen, President of the Hebrew University, welcomed the appointment:

As Head of the International Office, he has played a central role in strengthening the university’s position in the international arena as one of the world’s leading institutions. I am confident that his leadership will further advance excellence in teaching and research.”

Prof. Oron Shagrir expressed gratitude and outlined his vision:
“I thank the University Senate for the selection and look forward to working alongside Prof. Tamir Sheafer, the Hebrew University administration, and all faculty members to maintain the University’s leadership in Israel, foster research excellence, expand diversity among our students and staff, and implement innovative teaching and learning technologies.”
