Join us to celebrate! Launch of the Meteosat Third Generation – Sounder1 satellite, hosting the Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission

The official launch date is to be confirmed, and more precise information will follow as soon as possible. For now, the launch is scheduled for no earlier than the first week of July 2025.

MTG-S1 will be the first operational European sounder satellite in a geostationary orbit. It will observe the atmosphere at hyperspectral resolution using its Infrared Sounder, which provides temperature and humidity profiles to complement data from satellites such as MTG-I. It also carries the European Union’s Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission. As the second satellite in the next-generation Meteosat programme, it will enhance nowcasting and weather forecasting by improving the tracking of rapidly changing weather systems.

MTG-S1 will provide European weather services with completely new data to enable the development of cutting-edge applications and empower citizens, societies and economies to become more resilient against climate changes.

Pre-launch media briefing - 24 June 2025 at 15:00 CEST, hybrid from the Living Planet Symposium

  - Simonetta Cheli, Director of Earth Observation Programmes, ESA
  - Florence Rabier, Director-General, ECMWF
- Other experts will be present to answer a broad variety of questions
- Please note that briefings in other languages are also organised on the same day. In French: at 10:45 CEST, in Italian: at 13:00 CEST and in German: at 16:00 CEST

European launch event – no earlier than the first week of July 2025.

- Online: the link will be sent to registered participants
- A dedicated programme for journalists will take place earlier during the day, with opportunities for interviews with various experts, photos and video footage. Please get in touch with your requirements and we will do our best to accommodate them.
