L’ouverture d’une mine accroît jusqu’à 80 fois le taux de déforestation

L’établissement et l’expansion des mines contribuent à la destruction des forêts en dehors des sites miniers, révèle une nouvelle étude menée en Afrique subsaharienne.

Selon les chercheurs, l’exploitation minière n’est pas traditionnellement considérée comme la principale cause de déforestation directe. Cependant, la perturbation des habitats causée par l’exploitation minière en Afrique subsaharienne a été négligée. L’impact est important en raison de la construction d’infrastructures de soutien à l’exploitation minière.

Les résultats de l’étude ont en effet montré une perte de 1,171 millions d’hectares de forêt à proximité immédiate de la mine, soit 17,7 % de la couverture forestière de ces parcelles en 2000. En revanche, les zones plus éloignées ont subi une perte plus faible, soit 12 % de la couverture forestière. Les résultats indiquent que le taux de déforestation était significativement plus élevé dans les zones proches de la mine que dans les zones témoins.
