A new book called Soil Matters: the Story of Science at Johnstown Castle was launched yesterday, Wednesday, 16 October in Johnstown Castle County Wexford.

This new book written by Noel Culleton, Brian Coulter and Matt Wheeler outlines the story of Johnstown Castle from 1929 to 2024.

It tells the story of how research scientists at Johnstown Castle and its sister research stations developed the scientific knowledge that helped Irish agriculture to thrive, and how this enabled Ireland to become a successful producer of low cost safe and wholesome food. Its tells how the research centre re-invented itself to become a leading Environmental and Soils research centre committed to finding solutions to the environmental challenges that modern agriculture is facing.

The authors dedicated the book to the Larkin family who gifted Johnstown Castle to the nation, to Dr Tom Walsh whose wisdom and leadership led to the creation of Johnstown Castle research centre, and to all the staff who over the years helped to build its national and international reputation in the fields of science and agriculture development.

Teagasc chairman Liam Herlihy said; “This book is a celebration of the people of the past who have brought us to where we are today. It recognises the contribution that the research scientists that have worked in Johnstown Castle have made to modern agriculture.”

Ger Aherne, Chairman of the Irish Heritage Trust said that the book sheds lights on Johnstown Castle’s history. He explained how the book came about due to the research that was done when the old science lab was being prepared in the Castle for visitors.
