About Aalborg University Aalborg University offers education and research within the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, technical and health sciences. Aalborg University currently consolidates and further develops its profile as a dynamic and innovative research and educational institution oriented towards the surrounding world. It is characterised by combining a keen engagement in local, regional and national issues with an active commitment to international collaboration. Aalborg University – regionally, nationally and internationally Aalborg University meets regional demands for academically educated staff, research, innovation and communication, while collaborating with other Danish universities to meet national demands. The international perspective is reflected in the university's research and education activities through the employment of international teaching staff, the establishment of student exchange programmes and international research collaboration. Study programmes at Aalborg University Aalborg University wishes to cover and develop a wide and varied range of high quality academic and professional programmes within all the main areas noted above. In turn, these programmes aim to fulfill the requirements of both the private and the public sectors of the labour market. While Aalborg University also provides elite programmes within selected areas, it is taking steps to expand its reputation as an internationally recognised leading university within problem based learning. Research at Aalborg University Aalborg University is currently expanding its strong research areas ranging from basic research and applied research within all the academic fields represented at the university to world class research areas within selected fields. The university is also expanding its multidisciplinary research activities and increasing its collaboration across different research and knowledge areas. Aalborg University’s ambition is to become one of the leading innovative universities in Europe. The Network University Aalborg University is currently strengthening its position as a network university. This entails collaborating with regional and national educational institutions in Denmark as well as the creation of consortia and collaboration networks with other national and international universities. In addition Aalborg University aims to collaborate constructively, and actively, with local educational institutions and business partners in order to enhance competence and business development in the various regions in which it is represented. History of Aalborg University Aalborg University was created through a merger of a number of well-established institutions, combined with the establishment of a number of new faculties in 1974. Aalborg University's oldest study programme dates back to 1768 when the land management and cadastral development programme was first established. Other institutions included in Aalborg University were the Aalborg Regional Business School, established in 1920, the Danish Building Research Institute, established in 1947, Esbjerg Technical College, established in 1955, Aalborg Technical College, established in 1963, the School of Social Work in Aalborg, established in 1966, Denmark’s Academy of Engineering in Aalborg, established in 1967 and the Copenhagen Business School, Aalborg Regional Department, established in 1969. Aalborg University Centre was inaugurated in 1974, and a Faculty of Humanities, a Faculty of Social Sciences and a Faculty of Engineering and Science were established. In 1994 the university changed its name to Aalborg University. In 1966, the Department of Architecture and Design was established, in 2008 the Department of Law was established, and in 2010 a Faculty of Medicine was established. From the very beginning, Aalborg University was characterised by its well-reputed education form of problem based project work – also known as the Aalborg model, and by extensive collaboration with the surrounding society. Later on, the establishment of strong research fields has been added, some of which are in the international class. The number of students has increased from 3,000 during the first years of the university to the present over 18,000.
