Beyond Money and Markets: Identity Economics

10/11/2026 - 10/11/2026 Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main
Emplacement: Room 1G192, PEG Building,
Addresse Theodor-W.-Adorno-Platz 6, 60323 Frankfurt

The "homo economicus" of classic economic analysis looks nothing like real people, who have names, families, and communities and who describe themselves and others in terms of gender, class, religion, nation, and workplace. Identity Economics, by contrast, incorporates such social categories and the related norms into its models to provide a better analysis of economic behavior and outcomes. One of the leading scholars in this field is Prof. Rachel Kranton from the renowned Duke University (Durham, North Carolina). Under the title "Beyond Money and Markets: Identity Economics," she will speak about this field of research

on Tuesday, November 10, at 6:15 pm
in Room 1G192, PEG Building
(Theodor-W.-Adorno-Platz 4, Campus Westend)

and will demonstrate how Identity Economics provides a framework to capture the behavior and interaction of people based on social categories and related norms. This includes issues such as leadership in organizations and social inequality in society.

Rachel Kranton is James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Economics at Duke University and studies how institutions and the social setting affect economic outcomes. She develops theories of networks and has introduced identity into economic thinking. Her research contributes to many fields, including microeconomics, economic development, and industrial organization.

Rachel Kranton is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a fellow of the Econometric Society, and a fellow of the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory. She was awarded a Chaire Blaise Pascal. Along with colleagues, she is currently launching a new research network, Economic Research on Identity, Norms, and Narratives (ERINN).

The lecture is the second public event of the Goethe Leadership Centre, a new Collaborative Research Group (KFG) that officially began its work on October 1. Funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) for an initial period of four years, this interdisciplinary consortium of psychology and economics examines the role that leaders and their leadership style can play in the overall societal mood and democracy, and how it can be improved in the public interest through "Identity Leadership." The Collaborative Research Group "Rethinking Leadership: Identity-Based Leadership as a Group-Oriented Tool for Analyzing and Coping with the Challenges of Our Time"—also known as the Goethe Leadership Centre—was proposed jointly by economist Prof. Michael Kosfeld and psychologist Prof. Rolf van Dick, the latter of whom currently serves as the consortium's spokesperson.

The lecture will be held in English language. Participation is free, and the talk will be followed by a reception. For planning purposes, please confirm your participation with Dr. Gordon Adami at contact@goethe-leadership.org.
