The EU-funded project Mopo is bringing together researchers, modellers and energy stakeholders this autumn to explore how energy system modelling can support Europe’s transition in a context of climate change, energy security and competitiveness.
As Europe’s energy system faces increasingly complex challenges, energy system modelling is becoming an essential tool for understanding possible pathways, testing scenarios and supporting informed planning and investment decisions.
October will see
two major events taking place in Belgium, alongside the continuation of the
Spine Tools Event Series (
full programme here), which offers current and potential users the opportunity to explore practical tutorials, real-world case studies and hands-on applications of the Spine modelling tools.
The focus will first be in Leuven on
20 October, where the Mopo consortium will host the hybrid workshop
Spine Tools in Practice: Scenarios, Data and Investment Pathways for Energy Planning.
Taking place at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of
KU Leuven (Celestijnenlaan 300 B-3001 Heverlee, Leuven, Belgium)
and on line, the workshop marks a key milestone for the Mopo project, offering a
final wrap-up of the work carried out, connecting the dots between its different outcomes. It will explore
how scenarios, data and modelling tools can support energy planning and investment pathways, with a focus on industry, and provide an opportunity to move from the technical exploration of Spine Tools towards their
practical application, bringing together experiences and perspectives from the Mopo project and its users.

The event is open to both in-person and online participants, with deadlines for in-person participation.
The following two days,
21–22 October, attention will turn to Brussels for
ECEMP 2026 – Climate Change, Energy Security and Competitiveness: Modelling an Energy System Under Stress.
As lead organiser of the event, Mopo will bring together the energy and climate modelling community to discuss how models can help address some of the most pressing challenges currently shaping Europe’s energy system. The conference will provide a
space for researchers, modellers, policymakers and other energy stakeholders to exchange approaches and insights on the role of modelling in navigating the combined pressures of climate change, energy security and competitiveness.
Together, the Leuven workshop and ECEMP 2026 will offer two
complementary perspectives: from the practical use of modelling tools for energy planning and investment, to the broader research and policy challenges facing Europe's energy system.
Continuing the conversation from October and beyond…
The Spine Tools Event Series will continue throughout October, November and December with further real-world case studies, including an
Irish case study on 7 October, a
Baltic case study on 10 November, a
European case study on 24 November, and an
industrial case study on 1 December.

Through this programme, Mopo is
creating opportunities for current and potential users to discover Spine Tools, learn from practical applications and engage with a wider community working on the future of energy system modelling.
