Walking performance and daily activity are linked to better quality of life in people with multiple sclerosis


A study by the University of Eastern Finland found that quality of life in people with multiple sclerosis (MS) is strongly associated with their walking performance and functional capacity. The findings indicate that, among individuals with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), lower levels of disability, better walking performance and higher levels of daily physical activity are linked to better perceived quality of life. The results also suggest that simple walking tests may provide valuable insight into a patient’s overall well-being and could help support a more active lifestyle as part of MS care. The study was published in the prestigious journal Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders.

Multiple sclerosis has a significant impact on patients’ quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between quality of life, accelerometer-measured physical activity, walking performance and functional capacity in people with RRMS.

The researchers used a broad range of measurement methods. Physical activity was objectively assessed using an accelerometer, quality of life was evaluated with two established questionnaires (15D and RAND-36) and disability was measured using the EDSS and MSFC scales. In addition, participants completed several physical performance assessments, including the six-minute walk test.

People with RRMS reported significantly lower quality of life than healthy controls. Greater disability was strongly associated with poorer quality of life, while better walking performance and a higher daily step count were linked to better well-being. In contrast, the intensity of physical activity was not associated with quality of life.

Multiple sclerosis can significantly affect everyday life and overall well-being. The burden of the disease, combined with its unpredictable course, often leads to a reduced quality of life.

“These findings reinforce previous research and highlight the potential benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle. The results may help healthcare professionals encourage people with MS to increase their daily activity levels to support better quality of life,” says Doctoral Researcher Marko Luostarinen from the University of Eastern Finland.
