Contact Lenses: High Awareness, Limited Safe-Use Knowledge

06/08/2026 HEP Journals

Most participants were young undergraduate students aged 18–24. Although 97.9% of respondents had heard of contact lenses, merely 26.8% mastered professional knowledge of lens maintenance. Only 2.7% of all participants were current contact lens wearers. For spectacle wearers, complicated maintenance and eye irritation were the top reasons for refusing to switch to contact lenses. Among non-spectacle wearers, worries about ocular discomfort also lowered their acceptance.

Existing CL users showed mixed compliance. All users washed hands before handling lenses, and most avoided overnight wear. Nevertheless, poor adherence was common in lens replacement, regular cleaning and routine ophthalmic check-ups. Most students wore contact lenses purely for refractive correction, rather than cosmetic purposes.

This study fills the research gap of contact lens-related KAP (knowledge, attitude, practice) in Ghanaian health science students. It highlights an urgent need for targeted health education and standardized eye care services. Optimizing professional guidance will help reduce ocular complications and promote the safe use of contact lenses across the region.

The work titled “Contact Lens Knowledge and Practices Among Students in the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana: A Cross-Sectional Study”, was published on Eye & ENT Research (published on April 15, 2026).
