A new resource maps how impact investors, foundations and crowdfunding platforms can help close the financing gap for sustainable food system innovation.
The CLEVERFOOD project announces the publication of a new infopack exploring how private capital can support the transformation of Europe’s food system. The resource is aimed at researchers, living labs, innovators and policymakers looking to engage investors in food system innovation.
Transforming Europe’s food system could require up to USD 1 trillion a year, yet current investment falls short by hundreds of billions. A new infopack from the Horizon Europe project CLEVERFOOD titled Private funding to support food system transformation, explores why private capital remains an under-tapped resource for agrifood innovation — and what researchers, living labs, innovators and policymakers can do to change that.
The infopack draws on two years of hands-on experience from impact investor science labs, multi-actor workshops, and brokerage events that put investors directly in the room with food system innovators.
From these encounters, CLEVERFOOD distils what investors are really looking for, where communication between the two sides breaks down and how big the opportunity still is: agriculture and forestry draws interest from the majority of impact investors, yet captures only a fraction of the capital they actually deploy.
Built around five practical recommendations, the infopack is designed as a working tool. It is aimed at anyone trying to move food system innovation from small-scale pilots to real-world impact: research consortia, living labs, start-ups and policymakers alike.
