AI success starts with data: Fraunhofer FIT at Hannover Messe

At the Fraunhofer booth in hall 11, booth D33, Fraunhofer FIT will demonstrate how industrial data can be transformed into real capacity for action. The focus is on end-to-end data pipelines – from data acquisition and processing through to analysis with AI. Live demonstrators will illustrate how data quality determines the performance of AI systems and how assistance systems based on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) make complex data sets accessible in natural language.

Data has long since become a key resource for industry. However, its true potential is only unlocked when it can be understood, connected and used intelligently. This is precisely where Fraunhofer FIT comes in, showcasing at Hannover Messe how data can be turned into actionable insights.

At the core is a central idea: artificial intelligence is only as good as the data it works with. Yet in many companies, this data is fragmented, difficult to access or insufficiently prepared. Fraunhofer FIT shows how this can be changed – and how isolated data sources can be transformed into an intelligent, learning system.

"The trade fair visitors will experience an end-to-end journey: from the acquisition of industrial data to its structured preparation and on to analysis using modern AI methods. It becomes clear that technological innovation and human expertise are inseparably linked. Only through targeted training and the development of data literacy can companies truly leverage the potential of AI, " says Dr. Christina Gillmann, Deputy Head of the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Department at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT.

This interplay becomes particularly tangible in the live demonstrations at the booth. An interactive dashboard illustrates how data from different sources can be merged and analyzed. It not only displays results, but also makes the learning process of the AI visible – and thus shows how data quality and diversity directly affect model performance.

This is complemented by an intelligent assistance system based on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG). RAG is an approach in artificial intelligence that combines large language models (LLMs) with external knowledge bases. Via a chatbot interface, visitors can explore and analyze complex data sets simply by using natural language. The system connects existing knowledge with current data and thus helps to generate well-founded insights more quickly.

In this way, a compelling picture emerges of how the industry of tomorrow will function: data-driven, connected and increasingly supported by AI agents that not only analyze, but actively contribute to decision-making.
With its presence at the trade fair, Fraunhofer FIT shows that the path to successful AI applications does not start with the technology, but with the data – and with the people who understand and use it.

We have used AlphaGalileo since its foundation but frankly we need it more than ever now to ensure our research news is heard across Europe, Asia and North America. As one of the UK’s leading research universities we want to continue to work with other outstanding researchers in Europe. AlphaGalileo helps us to continue to bring our research story to them and the rest of the world.

AlphaGalileo has helped us more than double our reach at SciDev.Net. The service has enabled our journalists around the world to reach the mainstream media with articles about the impact of science on people in low- and middle-income countries, leading to big increases in the number of SciDev.Net articles that have been republished.
