Asia-Pacific Experts Define Vision for International Open Medical Journal (IOMJ) Launch

On November 10, 2025, International Open Medical Journal (IOMJ, eISSN 3069-0080) successfully held its Inaugural Asia-Pacific Editorial Board Meeting online. Over 60 experts from dozens of Chinese and international institutions, including the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhejiang University, Westlake University, Central South University, University of Cambridge, Peking University, and China Pharmaceutical University, gathered virtually. The meeting focused on the journal's positioning, development plan, operating model, and future initiatives, marking the launch of an English medical journal committed to high academic independence and benchmarking against top international publications.

IOMJ Journal Introduction

IOMJ is a double-blind, peer-reviewed international health science journal, established in August 2025 by the International Medical Association (IMA) and serving as its official journal. The journal aims to provide a comprehensive platform for disseminating groundbreaking research and advancements in the health science field. It strives to promote interdisciplinary research, drive innovation, and translate scientific discoveries into clinical applications that improve patient outcomes.

Key Aims and Scope include, but are not limited to:
  • Basic Medicine
  • Clinical Medicine
  • Translational Medicine
  • Biology
  • Pharmacy
  • Traditional Medicine and Natural Herbal Medicine
  • Public Health

Submissions: IOMJ is dedicated to publishing the latest research and practices spanning the health sciences and related interdisciplinary fields. The journal welcomes all types of consensus statements and accepts secondary publications of consensus.
Pioneering a New Landscape in Independent Publishing: Knowledge Equity, Diamond Access

Professor Xingxiang Pu, Editor-in-Chief of IOMJ and from Hunan Cancer Hospital, offered warm congratulations on the formation of the Editorial Board in his opening speech. He stressed that with China's increasing international voice in medical research, IOMJ’s launch is dedicated to meeting the need for publishing high-level research, requiring the team's solid efforts to enhance the journal's influence.

Researcher Xinjian Li, Co-Editor-in-Chief of IOMJ from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, expressed his full support for the journal's development, committing the team to building a high-level journal covering a wide range of biomedical fields.

Professor Chunwei Xu, Executive Editor-in-Chief, systematically presented the journal's vision and overall plan. He highlighted the significant role of IOMJ in challenging the century-old monopoly of major commercial publishers and establishing an independent, world-class publishing system. The journal's guiding principles are established as: "Knowledge Equity, Multiculturalism, Independence, Innovative Operations, and Diamond Access."

Professor Xu emphasized: IOMJ adopts the "Diamond Open Access" model. This non-profit approach, where the IMA covers all publication fees, ensures that neither authors nor readers incur any costs, achieving true knowledge sharing and equity. Currently, the journal has been indexed by the following databases: Ulrich's, ICI World of Journals, ESJI, Crossref, Google Scholar, and Scilit.

High-Standard Boutique Route: Focusing on the Frontier, Strict Quality Control
In terms of content positioning, IOMJ will focus on core areas such as global consensus guidelines, global disease burden, multi-omics, AI-driven diagnostics and treatment, and clinical translation. Journal features include a 24-hour pre-review service and no article processing charges (APC).

To ensure high standards and quality, IOMJ will initially follow a boutique route, planning to publish only about 10 high-quality articles per year using an "Online First" rolling publication model. Operationally, the journal adheres to non-commercial operation and academic independence, relying solely on IMA donations and sponsorship to safeguard publishing ethics and exclude commercial interests.

Professor Xu concluded by outlining the 2026 work plan, which includes preparing for the publication of the first issue, gaining indexing in more international databases, expanding international influence, attracting more international editorial members and manuscripts, and planning for all editorial board members to participate in drafting the International Medical Association (IMA) Global Health Declaration (Consensus).

IOMJ is now recruiting Advisors, Editors-in-Chief, Associate Editors, Editorial Board Members, and Young Editorial Board Members, and invites manuscript submissions. We look forward to your participation and contributions in jointly promoting the development of global health frontiers!
