Save the date: From space to safety at the 2025 EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference

Emplacement: Lyon, France
Addresse Lyon Congress Centre 50 Quai Charles de Gaulle

From high above Earth, meteorological satellites reveal both the scale and fine detail of the world’s most pressing weather and climate events. The theme of the 2025 EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference, “from space to safety: Earth observation for future weather and climate preparedness”, will guide discussions on how satellite data are turned into action – improving forecasts, addressing the climate crisis and supporting timely decisions that save lives, protect property and strengthen economies. Journalists, science communicators and content creators are invited to attend and report on these developments.

About the conference

On 15-19 September, more than 500 international experts will gather at the Lyon Congress Centre for the 2025 EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference, co-hosted this year by Météo-France, the national provider of weather and climate services in France.

The 2025 conference comes at a pivotal moment for European meteorology, as Europe renews its space infrastructure for monitoring weather, climate and the environment. This summer, EUMETSAT launched two landmark satellites: Meteosat Third Generation Sounder 1, carrying the Copernicus Sentinel-4 mission – the first atmospheric sounder in geostationary orbit over Europe – and Metop Second Generation A1, the inaugural satellite of the new polar-orbiting series, which also hosts the Copernicus Sentinel-5 mission. Both satellites are masterpieces of European technology, equipped with arrays of advanced instruments now undergoing commissioning.

The conference will provide updates on this critical work and on Europe’s future satellite programmes. The detailed programme is available here: EUMETSAT Meteorological Satellite Conference 2025 | EUMETSAT

Conference proceedings will be conducted in English. Interviews in German, French, Italian, and other European languages can be arranged on request.

AlphaGalileo has helped us more than double our reach at SciDev.Net. The service has enabled our journalists around the world to reach the mainstream media with articles about the impact of science on people in low- and middle-income countries, leading to big increases in the number of SciDev.Net articles that have been republished.
