Engineering Invites Submissions on AI for Engineering

08/05/2025 Frontiers Journals

Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly pivotal role in revolutionizing the field of engineering, triggering a new era of technological and industrial evolution. A series of recent breakthroughs in areas like natural language processing, computer vision, and machine learning, with the Nobel Prize-winning work in artificial neural networks and protein structure prediction serving as prime examples, have effectively bridged the gap between the physical and digital worlds. The emergence of general AI technologies, especially large language models, has given rise to new paradigms such as intelligent agents and embodied intelligence. These rapid progressions are deeply influencing the engineering domain, leading us closer to the objective of “Engineering for the benefit of humanity, technology for a better future.”

In an effort to fully explore the transformative potential of AI in engineering, Engineering is now inviting submissions from global experts and scholars. The journal is on the lookout for high-quality contributions that showcase novel AI methodologies, algorithms, and applications aimed at solving real-world engineering problems. It particularly encourages submissions that go beyond minor improvements and instead present substantial advancements with verifiable impact. Submissions can take the form of original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and incisive perspective pieces.

The journal welcomes submissions on the current status and key directions of AI applications in a wide range of engineering areas. These include, but are not restricted to, intelligent manufacturing, where AI can optimize production processes and improve efficiency; AI-enabled new materials, which might involve using AI to design and develop materials with unique properties; AI-enabled transportation, for instance, in autonomous vehicle systems and traffic management; AI-enabled energy, such as in optimizing power generation and distribution; AI-enabled smart cities, which can enhance urban planning and resource management; AI-enabled environment, perhaps for environmental monitoring and prediction; AI-enabled agriculture, like in crop yield prediction and precision farming; and AI-enabled medicine, for example, in medical image analysis and disease diagnosis.

Regarding submission requirements, original research articles should be around 6,000 words. Comprehensive reviews can range from 6,000 to 8,000 words, while insightful perspective pieces are expected to be 3,000 words. Views & Comments should be limited to 2,000 words. Notably, the submission invitation is ongoing, providing researchers with ample time to prepare and submit their work.

Engineering, which was launched in 2015, is a collaborative effort between the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Strategic Consulting Center of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Higher Education Press, and Elsevier. This monthly open-access journal offers a platform for high-level communication and publication of significant engineering achievements. By doing so, it promotes the accelerated development of engineering technology for the betterment of humanity and a more promising future. The journal features various sections, including news highlights, perspective articles, engineering achievements, and research papers. It is indexed in authoritative databases such as SCI, EI, Scopus, DOAJ, CSCD, and CSTPCD, boasting a latest SCI impact factor of 10.1 and ranking in Q1 in the engineering, multidisciplinary category.
For more information or to submit a manuscript, interested parties can visit the journal’s official website at http://www.journals.elsevier.com/engineering. The journal anticipates the active participation and valuable contributions of the global research community, as together, they can drive innovation and development in the field of engineering through the power of artificial intelligence.

We have used AlphaGalileo since its foundation but frankly we need it more than ever now to ensure our research news is heard across Europe, Asia and North America. As one of the UK’s leading research universities we want to continue to work with other outstanding researchers in Europe. AlphaGalileo helps us to continue to bring our research story to them and the rest of the world.
Peter Dunn, Director of Press and Media Relations at the University of Warwick
AlphaGalileo has helped us more than double our reach at SciDev.Net. The service has enabled our journalists around the world to reach the mainstream media with articles about the impact of science on people in low- and middle-income countries, leading to big increases in the number of SciDev.Net articles that have been republished.
