Daithi O'Murchu Marine Research Station
The Daithi O'Murchu Marine Research Stataion (DOMMRS) has been in operation since 1991, originally as part of University College Cork's Aquaculture and Development Centre. Established as an independent research station in late 2005, research at the station has been steadily growing since. The station's main focus thus far has been on: aquaculture husbandry, biofuel production, minimising waste in aquaculture and fisheries, and a wide variety of novel macro- and micro-algae applications. DOMMRS has participated in, and coordinated, a number of European Framework 7 projects, and aims to continue this vein of work under Horizon 2020. The DOMMRS is uniquely suited to participation in collaborative research projects, with both academic and industrial expertise on staff. DOMMRS has algal and shellfish hatchery facilities, access to commercial scale shellfish and finfish farms, fully-equipped laboratory, pump ashore and recirculation units, seawater filtration and treatment complex, freshwater and seawater storage silos, as well as workshop and office space. Recently added facilities include a number of larger tanks, while at sea we have long-line systems in place for seaweed cultivation.
