TUdi Project Wraps Up: Delivering Tools and Resources for Sustainable Soil Management

Healthy soil is the foundation of productive and resilient agriculture, but understanding and managing it effectively can be complex. That’s where the TUdi project has made its mark.

As the project officially concludes, TUdi leaves behind a legacy of international collaboration, research, and practical tools for soil regeneration. On 4 June 2025, the project held its final meeting in Brussels, bringing together partners and stakeholders to reflect on its achievements and future impact.

TUdi, a joint initiative between the European Union and China, funded through the Horizon 2020 programme and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, has worked across Europe, China, and New Zealand to tackle soil degradation.

Looking back on what the project has achieved, TUdi has created useful resources that are freely available to help farmers, landowners, and practitioners adopt better soil management practices. These outputs include:

  • TUdi’s Decision Support Tools (DSTs), now freely available online on the TUdi app, are designed to help farmers, researchers, and land managers make informed decisions for healthier soils.

  • TUdi’s Socio-Economic Support Toolkit (SEST), developed to help farmers make more informed, financially sound decisions. By providing in-depth economic analyses, SEST enables users to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of soil restoration measures and advanced fertilisation practices, ultimately guiding more strategic and sustainable farm management. SEST is also freely available online.

  • Within the scope of the project, 14 multilingual leaflets have been developed to share practical guidance and research findings on various aspects of soil health management. These resources cover a broad range of issues, from erosion control and nutrient management to improving soil structure and leveraging ecosystem services, offering accessible support for farmers and land managers across different agricultural contexts. All leaflets are available on the project website, as well as on EU-FarmBook.

  • A children’s brochure, “Child Explorers on a Mission for Good Soil,” has been created to engage young audiences’ interest in soil health through stories and custom illustrations designed specifically for children.

  • A legacy booklet has been produced to provide a comprehensive overview of the project’s key achievements and resources. It includes information about the Decision Support Tools (DSTs), highlights from stakeholder events and international cooperation, insights into the EU-China partnership, and all TUdi-developed leaflets in English.

TUdi’s achievements mark an important milestone in the journey toward sustainable soil management. The tools, knowledge, and partnerships built throughout the project provide a strong foundation for continued innovation and action in soil restoration. By making these resources widely available, TUdi ensures that the work doesn’t end here, but rather, that it contributes to ongoing efforts to safeguard soil health, and thus towards more sustainable agricultural practices.

Testimonios

We have used AlphaGalileo since its foundation but frankly we need it more than ever now to ensure our research news is heard across Europe, Asia and North America. As one of the UK’s leading research universities we want to continue to work with other outstanding researchers in Europe. AlphaGalileo helps us to continue to bring our research story to them and the rest of the world.
Peter Dunn, Director of Press and Media Relations at the University of Warwick
AlphaGalileo has helped us more than double our reach at SciDev.Net. The service has enabled our journalists around the world to reach the mainstream media with articles about the impact of science on people in low- and middle-income countries, leading to big increases in the number of SciDev.Net articles that have been republished.
