Continuous flow turns pine sawdust into aromatic chemicals ten times faster

06/11/2026 HEP Journals

Reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) has been pursued by researchers in both biomass conversion and lignin valorization fields, and realized in batch systems, such as pilot-scale ethanol/water reactors and multi-liter stirred autoclaves. However, continuous RCF with efficient mass transfer and short residence time has not yet been achieved.
Here, the team propose a high-pressure screw reaction system integrated with acid-promoted ethanol/water solvent, and demonstrate continuous depolymerization of pine lignin into guaiacol monomers. The system uses 10% Pd/C, 3% phosphoric acid, 2 MPa H₂ at 210 ℃, and achieves a 12% monomer yield within 8 min. The production efficiency reaches a production efficiency of 243 mg/(g·h), about 10 times higher than that in batch process.
This work provides a continuous route to aromatic monomers from lignocellulosic biomass and opens a viable way to industrial-scale lignin-first biorefining. The work titled “Scalable produection of aromatic monomers from pine biomass through reductive catalytic fractionation in a continuous mod”, was published on Journal of Forestry Engineering (published on Sep. 25, 2026).

Testimonios

We have used AlphaGalileo since its foundation but frankly we need it more than ever now to ensure our research news is heard across Europe, Asia and North America. As one of the UK’s leading research universities we want to continue to work with other outstanding researchers in Europe. AlphaGalileo helps us to continue to bring our research story to them and the rest of the world.

AlphaGalileo has helped us more than double our reach at SciDev.Net. The service has enabled our journalists around the world to reach the mainstream media with articles about the impact of science on people in low- and middle-income countries, leading to big increases in the number of SciDev.Net articles that have been republished.
