Engineering Porphyrinic MOFs via In-Situ N–H Chlorination for HOCl Generation, Detoxification, Phototheranostics and Antimicrobial Activity

Integration of reactive chlorine chemistry into porous frameworks has been pursued by researchers in both materials science and biomedical fields, and has been realized in traditional catalyst systems. However, the in-situ controlled chlorination within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for multifunctional therapeutic platforms has not yet been explored.
Here, the authors report a porphyrin-based zirconium metal-organic framework, PCN-222-Cl, and we demonstrate the controlled N–H chlorination of porphyrin ligands using NaDCC. The formation of electron-withdrawing N–Cl bonds significantly increases the electron-deficient character of the porphyrin macrocycle, enabling efficient catalytic oxidation of chloride ions under mildly acidic to neutral conditions, accompanied by electronic reconfiguration synergistically coupled with Lewis-acidic Zr6O4(OH)4 nodes and an intrinsic photothermal response.
This work provides a generalizable strategy to engineer porphyrinic frameworks for multifunctional reactive chlorine chemistry and opens a way to integrate catalytic, photothermal, and oxidative properties for enhanced antibacterial, detoxifying, and antitumor applications. The work entitled “Engineering Porphyrinic MOFs via In-Situ N–H Chlorination for HOCl Generation, Detoxification, Phototheranostics and Antimicrobial Activity” was published in Advanced Powder Materials (available online on 2 July 2026).

Testimonios

We have used AlphaGalileo since its foundation but frankly we need it more than ever now to ensure our research news is heard across Europe, Asia and North America. As one of the UK’s leading research universities we want to continue to work with other outstanding researchers in Europe. AlphaGalileo helps us to continue to bring our research story to them and the rest of the world.

AlphaGalileo has helped us more than double our reach at SciDev.Net. The service has enabled our journalists around the world to reach the mainstream media with articles about the impact of science on people in low- and middle-income countries, leading to big increases in the number of SciDev.Net articles that have been republished.
