The video highlights the modelling, simulation, data and visualisation solutions developed by the EU-funded MERIDIONAL project to support more accurate assessment of wind energy systems. A final webinar on 30 September will present and discuss the project’s latest results.
After four years of research and collaboration, the
MERIDIONAL project has released a new video presenting the solutions it has developed to turn four years of operational turbine and atmospheric data, into more accurate predictions of wind turbine performance and wind farm scenarios across a range of atmospheric conditions. The
video provides an overview of the project’s
modelling and simulation toolchain, which lets users define the situation they want to predict, such as the wind farm or the turbine they want to design, and then selects the appropriate models for the task, from simplified approaches to the high-fidelity simulations needed for the most complex flow conditions.
It also presents
WindLab, MERIDIONAL’s Knowledge and Data Hub, which brings together project data, knowledge and resources, and
Vistle, an open-source, interactive 3D visualisation environment. that lets users immersively explore and interact with complex wind flow data sets.
Through interviews with project partners, the video explains how these tools and approaches were developed and applied within MERIDIONAL.
The video also reflects on one of the project’s most distinctive achievements. The conventional wind industry and the airborne wind energy sector worked closely together. It brought understanding of how conventional wind farms use data and are designed, and it introduced the use of kites as sensors to better understand loads, performance and wind resource potential.
All the tools developed within MERIDIONAL will be released as open source, available to any partner, industry or university that wants to use them.
The project’s latest developments will also be presented during MERIDIONAL’s
final webinar on 30 September 2026,
“Enhancing wind farm resource assessment, design, and operation – The latest developments from the MERIDIONAL project.” The webinar will provide stakeholders, researchers and other interested audiences with an opportunity to learn more about the results and discuss their potential applications with the project team.
