Sentences and clauses in Jan Neruda’s Tales of the Lesser Quarter: a stylometric analysis

Using stylometric indicators, it examines sentence length, the ratio of simple sentences to compound sentences, the relationship between the narrator and the characters, the degree of parataxis and hypotaxis, and the horizontal structure of the text. The results demonstrate the stability of Neruda’s syntactic model across the collection. Parataxis is the dominant principle, while hypotaxis serves more as a means of semantic differentiation. The differences between simple sentences and compound sentences are mainly quantitative in nature. The horizontal division of the text does not manifest itself as a factor of syntactic fragmentation, but rather as a means of compositional organisation and thematic clarity. The stylometric data thus corrects the idea of the fragmentary nature of Neruda’s syntax and confirms its structural coherence.

Jan Neruda (1834-1891) was a Czech journalist, writer, poet and art critic; one of the most prominent representatives of Czech Realism and a member of the "May School".

Testimonios

We have used AlphaGalileo since its foundation but frankly we need it more than ever now to ensure our research news is heard across Europe, Asia and North America. As one of the UK’s leading research universities we want to continue to work with other outstanding researchers in Europe. AlphaGalileo helps us to continue to bring our research story to them and the rest of the world.

AlphaGalileo has helped us more than double our reach at SciDev.Net. The service has enabled our journalists around the world to reach the mainstream media with articles about the impact of science on people in low- and middle-income countries, leading to big increases in the number of SciDev.Net articles that have been republished.
