An Overview of Mathematical Programming Solvers: Theory, Development, and Recent Advances

29/07/2026 HEP Journals

Mathematical programming solvers are software tools designed to solve real-world problems using mathematical programming algorithms. They are widely used in areas such as manufacturing, transportation, finance, energy, logistics, and supply chains, where they help improve decision-making in planning, assignment, and scheduling.

In this review article, the authors provide an overview of the theoretical foundations, historical development, and recent advances of mathematical programming solvers. The paper discusses classical methods such as the simplex algorithm, interior-point methods, and branch-and-bound techniques, and then turns to newer developments supported by parallel computing, GPU acceleration, and artificial intelligence.

The review also highlights the recent rise of solvers developed by institutions and companies headquartered in China, including COPT, MindOpt, OptVerse, TAYLOR, and other representative China-originated solvers. Some of these solvers have ranked among the top performers in Hans Mittelmann’s public benchmark tests. However, benchmark results may not fully capture the diversity of real-world optimization problems.

Testimonios

We have used AlphaGalileo since its foundation but frankly we need it more than ever now to ensure our research news is heard across Europe, Asia and North America. As one of the UK’s leading research universities we want to continue to work with other outstanding researchers in Europe. AlphaGalileo helps us to continue to bring our research story to them and the rest of the world.
Peter Dunn, Director of Press and Media Relations at the University of Warwick
AlphaGalileo has helped us more than double our reach at SciDev.Net. The service has enabled our journalists around the world to reach the mainstream media with articles about the impact of science on people in low- and middle-income countries, leading to big increases in the number of SciDev.Net articles that have been republished.
Ben Deighton, SciDevNet
AlphaGalileo is a great source of global research news. I use it regularly.
