The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is proud to congratulate Prof. Benjamin Weiss of the Einstein Institute for Mathematics on being awarded the Israel Prize in the field of mathematics, computer science, and computer engineering research.
Prof. Weiss is one of Israel’s most distinguished mathematicians, with an extraordinary academic career spanning more than six decades. He has published over 200 scientific papers on a wide range of subjects, including ergodic theory and topological dynamics, orbital equivalence, probability, information theory, game theory, and descriptive group theory.
His pioneering contributions have earned him broad international recognition. Among his many honors, Prof. Weiss is an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a recipient of the prestigious Rothschild Prize.
Prof. Oron Shagrir, Rector of the Hebrew University, said: “Prof. Benjamin Weiss embodies the very best of the Hebrew University: intellectual boldness, rigorous scholarship, and a lifelong commitment to advancing knowledge. His work has shaped how mathematicians understand dynamics and randomness, and his influence is deeply felt through generations of researchers in Israel and around the world. We are proud to celebrate this well-deserved Israel Prize.”
The Israel Prize committee praised Prof. Weiss’s profound impact on the mathematical world, stating: “Prof. Weiss is one of the greatest researchers in the field of dynamics, a pillar of the mathematical community and has shaped generations of researchers in Israel and around the world. His in-depth research, spanning over 60 years of activity and over two hundred papers, has redefined the mathematical understanding of the phenomenon of randomness in deterministic systems.”
The Hebrew University celebrates this remarkable achievement and takes great pride in Prof. Weiss’s enduring contributions to science, scholarship, and the advancement of mathematical research in Israel and worldwide.
