The Hebrew University of Jerusalem is pleased to announce that Professor Noam Nisan, of the Rachel and Selim Benin School of Computer Science and Engineering, has been named a 2025 Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). Professor Nisan is one of 71 new Fellows recognized this year for achieving significant results through technical innovation and service to the computing community. We extend our sincere congratulations to Professor Nisan on this professional milestone, which reflects his long-standing dedication to the advancement of theoretical computer science.
As an ACM Fellow, Professor Nisan joins a group representing the top 1% of the association's global membership. The 2025 honorees were selected from a pool of over 100,000 professionals across 14 countries for their contributions to established and emerging disciplines. Professor Nisan’s recognition is based specifically on his foundational work in complexity theory and his role in establishing the field of economics and computation.
Professor Nisan’s research is centered on Algorithmic Game Theory, which applies economic principles to the analysis and design of computer systems. A key focus of his work has been the initiation of Algorithmic Mechanism Design, a field dedicated to creating complex markets and auctions that remain effective even when participants act in their own self-interest. His earlier research also includes significant contributions to computational complexity, particularly regarding the development of pseudorandom generators.
Prof. Oron Shagrir, Rector of the Hebrew University, said: “This distinction reflects not only Professor Nisan’s pioneering contributions to complexity theory and to the field of economics and computation, but also his lasting impact on how we understand computation and design systems that serve society. We are proud that his work inspires colleagues worldwide and helps train the next generation of scientific leaders at the Hebrew University.”
The university takes pride in Professor Nisan’s inclusion in this year’s class of Fellows, as it underscores the quality of research being conducted within the School of Computer Science and Engineering. Professor Nisan will be formally recognized for these achievements at the ACM awards banquet on June 13, 2026, in San Francisco. His work continues to serve as an important resource for both his colleagues and the next generation of computing professionals.
