WASHINGTON (May 5, 2025) — The American College of Cardiology announced today the appointment of Matthias Nahrendorf, MD, PhD, as the new Editor-in-Chief of JACC: Basic to Translational Science. Nahrendorf brings to the journal a distinguished career in cardiovascular research, imaging and immunology, along with a commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and scientific excellence.

JACC: Basic to Translational Science is an open access journal that serves as a forum for advancing the field of translational cardiovascular medicine and as a platform for accelerating the translation of novel scientific discoveries into new therapies that improve clinical outcomes for patients affected with or at risk for cardiovascular disease.

As Editor-in-Chief of JACC: Basic to Translational Science, Nahrendorf said he aims to further the journal's mission of publishing cutting-edge research with high visibility, quality and impact.

Nahrendorf currently serves as the Director of the Gordon Center for Medical Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), where he leads efforts to integrate imaging technologies with cardiovascular and immunological research, and as a professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School. His laboratory at the MGH Center for Systems Biology focuses on the role of immunity in cardiovascular health and disease.

Nahrendorf has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications, reflecting the significant impact of his work in the fields of cardio-immunology, heart failure, vascular biology and hematology. His contributions have been recognized with numerous awards, including the MGH Research Scholar Award (2014–2019), the Basic Research Award from the German Society of Cardiology (2015), and the MGH Martin Prize (2019).

His research has significantly advanced the understanding of how immune responses contribute to cardiovascular pathology. By pioneering advanced imaging techniques such as MRI, nuclear scans and optical imaging, Nahrendorf has opened new, non-invasive ways to understand how heart disease develops at the cellular level.

In recognition of his contributions, Nahrendorf has also been appointed to prestigious positions such as the NHLBI Board of External Experts and has served as Chair of the Atherosclerosis Gordon Research Conference.
