You are a scientist, and your scientific dream has not come true yet? Take part at the unprecedented Dream Chemistry Award Contest, organised by the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences!
It’s every scientist's dream to change the world with discoveries. But many scientific dreams cannot come true – the underlying research projects are too visionary, too difficult, and quite often just too expensive to become reality soon. With scientific daydreamers in mind, the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IPC PAS) in Warsaw organises the Dream Chemistry Award Contest (DCA) – for the most interesting research dream project in the field of chemistry and its borderlines with physics, biology, medicine and materials engineering. The winner will receive a statuette, 15,000 Euro and the opportunity to popularise the project topic (in the scope to be agreed with the winner) in a press release announcing the Contest results.
„We want to honour truly creative scientists with interesting research ideas, who for different reasons – technological, financial or community-related ones – have not been in position to implement their projects already now”, says Prof. Robert Hołyst, the director of the IPC PAS, and stresses that the major benefit for the Institute from the Contest is the opportunity to establish contacts with talented, open-minded researchers.
The Honorary Committee of the Dream Chemistry Award Contest is composed of outstanding chemists: Prof. Richard Schrock (MIT), Nobel Prize winner, Prof. Krzysztof Matyjaszewski (Carnegie Mellon University), and Prof. Bartosz Grzybowski (Northwestern University).
The projects submitted for the Contest will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee, composed of renowned Polish scientists working in chemistry, physics, biology, medicine and materials engineering. The list of the members of the Scientific Committee is public and available from the Contest’s website.
The members of both Committees will sign a non-disclosure and non-use statement with regard to the contents of the projects submitted for the Contest.
The Dream Chemistry Award Contest is addressed to researchers from around the world, aged not more than 36, who defended their doctoral dissertation in 2006 or later. The prize will be awarded solely for a research project waiting for implementation. The jury makes it clear, however, that earlier scientific accomplishments of the candidates will be also considered in the selection of the winner.
To have the Contest entry accepted, the candidate must be nominated by a researcher holding the academic doctoral degree or higher, with at least twenty years’ experience since the date of publication of his/her first scientific paper. The deadline for submission of Contest nominations is 30 September 2013. The candidates’ entries can be submitted until 31 October 2013.
From among the nominees, the Scientific Committee will select five finalists who in early 2014 will be invited at the organiser’s expense to Warsaw to present their projects in closed presentations. After hearing all the presentations, the Scientific Committee will announce the Contest winner.
The name of the Winner and the title of the award-winning project will be announced in a press release that will be released to the media after the results of the Contest will be known. The Award winner will participate in deciding about the form and scope of his/her project description in the press release, as well as will have right to finally accept this description.
