A global forum will be held to discuss the future of “Physical AI,” a technology that enables artificial intelligence to perceive, understand, and act in the real world through the physical embodiment of robots and machines. Experts from industry, academia, and research institutions in Korea and abroad will gather to share the latest technological developments in humanoid robotics and Physical AI and explore future directions for the industrial ecosystem.
The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM, President Seog-Hyeon Ryu) will host the 2026 Global Forum on Mechanical Engineering beginning at 1:30 p.m. on September 7 (Monday) at the Science and Technology Convention Center in Seoul under the theme “Robotics Shaping Tomorrow’s Industrial Ecosystem with Physical AI.”
Held in celebration of KIMM’s 50th anniversary, this year’s forum is designed to examine the potential of Physical AI, which is rapidly expanding across industries and everyday life, including manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, and healthcare, while exploring development strategies for Korea’s robotics and mechanical engineering industries. In addition to expert presentations, the event will feature humanoid robot demonstrations, exhibitions of advanced research achievements, and a livestream for online audiences.

Physical AI refers to technologies that move artificial intelligence beyond the digital realm by integrating it into robots and machines, enabling them to directly perceive their surroundings, make decisions, and take action. Machines of the future are evolving beyond devices that simply repeat predefined motions into intelligent systems capable of interacting with the physical world and learning autonomously.
In recent years, the applications of robotics have expanded well beyond collaborative robots working alongside people in factories. They now include mobile robots that deliver goods, agricultural robots that monitor crop conditions, field robots that assist or replace humans in complex and hazardous environments such as disaster response and defense, and medical robots that support rehabilitation and mobility, bringing robotic technologies increasingly closer to everyday life.
The forum will also feature a live demonstration of KAIROS, a Korean AI humanoid robot currently under development by KIMM. Equipped with visual and tactile sensors and artificial intelligence, KAIROS is designed to perceive its surroundings and perform mobility, manipulation, and interactive tasks. It is being developed for a wide range of applications, from household assistance and caregiving to manufacturing automation, disaster response, safety, and defense.
The keynote address will be delivered by Professor Byoung-Tak Zhang of Seoul National University under the title “Humanoid AI: From Generative AI to Embodied Intelligence.” Professor Zhang will introduce artificial intelligence technologies that enable humanoid robots to understand diverse environments and tasks and make autonomous decisions, while also presenting future directions for the development of humanoid AI.
In the following presentation, Min-Pyo Kim, CEO of Doosan Robotics, will speak on “The Present and Future of Physical AI at Doosan Robotics,” presenting current robotic technologies used in industrial settings and the future outlook for Physical AI. KIMM President Seog-Hyeon Ryu will then present “From Machinery to Intelligence: KIMM Opening the Era of Physical AI,” outlining a future in which machines evolve into intelligent systems capable of independently perceiving, reasoning, acting, and learning. He will also introduce KIMM’s research vision for expanding Physical AI across robotics, manufacturing, energy, environmental technologies, and digital engineering.
Alongside the forum, KIMM will operate an AI Robotics Pavilion and a Five Flagship Brands Pavilion at the venue to showcase its major research achievements. The AI Robotics Pavilion will feature KAIROS, KIMM’s Korean AI humanoid robot designed to connect industrial applications with everyday life, as well as key KAIROS components such as high-efficiency actuators and sensory systems.
The pavilion will also showcase autonomous cooperative delivery robots in which drones and ground robots work together to transport goods across land, sea, and air; autonomous orchard monitoring robots that navigate open-field orchards to precisely detect and monitor pests and diseases; last-mile delivery robots capable of seamlessly traveling inside and outside buildings by interfacing with shared entrances and elevators; and smart robotic prosthetic hands and legs that assist grasping and walking by responding to users’ intentions and movements.
At the Five Flagship Brands Pavilion, KIMM will showcase KAIROS, MANUX, KHEATUP, Air Five, and KIMM Cyber Labs, which were selected in celebration of the institute’s 50th anniversary and are being developed as KIMM’s representative research brands.
The exhibition will introduce KIMM’s flagship research achievements, including an AI humanoid robot that interacts with people and learns autonomously; advanced manufacturing equipment based on domestically developed CNC technologies; a high-temperature heat pump system that utilizes industrial waste heat; air-cleaning technologies that simultaneously reduce greenhouse gases, hazardous gases, and fine particles emitted during semiconductor manufacturing processes; and an AI-based virtual engineering platform that supports the entire engineering lifecycle from design to operation.
Through the forum, KIMM plans to strengthen collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutions in the fields of robotics and Physical AI, while accelerating the industrial application and commercialization of its research achievements. The institute also expects these efforts to enhance the technological competitiveness of domestically developed robots and manufacturing equipment, reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, and lower product development costs for small and medium-sized enterprises and mid-sized companies.

KIMM has continued to host the Global Forum on Mechanical Engineering, bringing together experts from industry, academia, and research institutions in Korea and abroad to examine major issues in mechanical engineering and discuss future development directions. Now in its 13th edition, this year’s forum is being held in celebration of KIMM’s 50th anniversary and will provide an opportunity to explore how robotics and Physical AI are reshaping industries and to present new growth directions for Korea’s mechanical engineering sector.
