International Symposium for Moonshot Goal 8: Weather Controllability 2025

Ort Tokyo, Japan
Adresse : sola city Conference Center, sola city Hall[West] (4-6 Kandasurugadai, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. 101-0062) and Online (Zoom Webinar)

The Moonshot Research and Development Program, launched by the Cabinet Office of Japan, promotes high-risk, high-impact R&D aiming to achieve ambitious Moonshot Goals and address challenges facing future society, such as super-aging populations and global warming.
Moonshot Goal 8 promotes innovative research and development of "weather-control technologies," aiming to realize a safe and secure society free from the threats of extreme weather disasters by 2050, through the mitigation of increasingly severe typhoons and heavy rainfall. Through our research and development so far, simulations have shown that heavy rainfall can be altered by human intervention, and the potential for controlling typhoons is also beginning to emerge.
To advance this vision, Moonshot Goal 8 is currently preparing for field experiments with careful consideration of Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications (ELSI), while simultaneously enhancing weather forecasting and control technologies, quantifying the effects of disaster prevention, and identifying viable routes for societal integration.
To address the technical and societal challenges of weather control, Moonshot Goal 8 hosts an international symposium that brings together experts from diverse fields such as meteorology, engineering, mathematical sciences, and humanities and social sciences.
The symposium will showcase progress from the Project Managers of Moonshot Goal 8, alongside lectures and panel discussions by leading experts from around the world.

About the Japan Science and Technology Agency
Our world faces unprecedented global challenges—such as climate change, energy crises, and emerging infectious diseases—that demand innovative solutions. JST will rise to these challenges through “Science and Technology,” as a national research and development agency that plays a central role in implementing Japan’s science, technology, and innovation policy. We support fundamental research and startups to create new value, develop R&D strategies, foster the next generation of talent, disseminate vital information, and manage the Japan University Fund. Like a compass guiding ships through turbulent waters, JST will chart the way towards a vibrant and secure future by empowering science through a multifaceted approach.

We have used AlphaGalileo since its foundation but frankly we need it more than ever now to ensure our research news is heard across Europe, Asia and North America. As one of the UK’s leading research universities we want to continue to work with other outstanding researchers in Europe. AlphaGalileo helps us to continue to bring our research story to them and the rest of the world.

AlphaGalileo has helped us more than double our reach at SciDev.Net. The service has enabled our journalists around the world to reach the mainstream media with articles about the impact of science on people in low- and middle-income countries, leading to big increases in the number of SciDev.Net articles that have been republished.
