Online workshop: Tackling misleading food and health communication in Europe

Food and health claims reach consumers every day through packaging, advertising, social media and influencer content. Some claims are clearly false, but many misleading messages operate through omission, oversimplification, exaggeration or implication, and may remain legal while still shaping people’s perceptions of what is healthy, safe or reliable.

Now, we need your expert voice to gather input and help achieve the best possible outcome. The Infoodmation project has been examining this information landscape by analysing 322 potentially misleading food communication examples collected across 13 European countries, together with more than 540,000 social media posts by popular influencers across 16 European countries. The project has also gathered stakeholder perspectives through two workshops involving different fields connected to food information and misinformation.

This online workshop will present and discuss findings from the project on how food misinformation is generated and spread, and how it may affect consumers’ choices. The discussion will focus on practical actions that different stakeholders can take to reduce the impact of misleading food communication, as well as existing best practices that could be replicated or adapted in different contexts.

The workshop is open to researchers, policymakers, food industry representatives, influencers, NGO representatives, activists, media experts, science communicators and fact-checkers interested in contributing to a clearer and more trustworthy food information environment.

Registered participants will receive an overview of the Infoodmation results and the questions to be discussed at least one week before the event.
