• Aston ranked as a top university in the UK for median graduate earnings

Aston University has been ranked in the top 14% in the UK for median graduate earnings five years after graduation.

New figures show that the University ranks 21st out of 156 higher education institutions in the latest government Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO) data.

The new statistics also show that graduates from the 2017/18 cohort recorded median earnings of £40,300 five years after completing their studies, which is the second highest salary ranking of a West Midlands university. Within this category Aston also outranks several research-intensive Russell Group universities such as the University of Leeds, the University of Manchester and the University of Glasgow. Each year the Department for Education releases the LEO dataset which links higher education records with tax and earnings information, providing insight into graduate outcomes after university. The ranking highlights medians – or middle points – of employed graduates’ salaries.

The latest figures also show that Aston performed strongly in shorter-term measures. Graduates from the 2019/20 cohort achieved median earnings of £33,700 three years after graduation, placing the University 25th out of 162 institutions and within the top 16% nationally. For one year after graduation Aston University’s median earnings are reported as £28,200 for the 2021/2022 graduating cohort, as observed in the tax year 2023/2024. This also places Aston in the top quarter.

Last year the University launched Aston Power Skills – AI & digital, environmental sustainability, innovation & entrepreneurship, and inclusive leadership, which are studied by all undergraduate students. These four areas were identified as part of Aston’s 2030 strategy and in response to knowledge of critical capabilities for the future of work developed through the University’s extensive partnerships with industry.
