Two Worlds: Collocational Analysis of the Terms Roma and Gypsy in the Media and Social Networks

The study focuses on a corpus analysis of the context associated with the Roma ethnic group. The examined terms are Romany (man), Gypsy (man), Romani (woman), Gypsy (woman), Roma people, Gypsies, through which the key context is generated.

The source of this research is Online1 corpus, which is part of the Czech National Corpus and represents the first generation of the monitoring corpus. As the corpus covers the period 2017–2021, the aim of the study is to provide a synchronous view of this issue. Particular attention is paid to whether significant differences can be identified between the two artificially created subcorpora examined in the terms of the use of the politically correct term Romany (man) and the traditional term Gypsy (man).

AlphaGalileo has helped us more than double our reach at SciDev.Net. The service has enabled our journalists around the world to reach the mainstream media with articles about the impact of science on people in low- and middle-income countries, leading to big increases in the number of SciDev.Net articles that have been republished.
