Announcing a new article publication in BIO Integration. This review explores the intersection between large language models (LLMs) and cognitive science by examining similarities and differences between LLMs and human cognitive processes. It evaluates methods for assessing LLMs’ cognitive abilities and discusses their potential as cognitive models. The article surveys applications of LLMs across multiple cognitive domains and highlights insights relevant to cognitive science research. Cognitive biases and limitations of LLMs are analyzed alongside proposed approaches for improving performance. The integration of LLMs with cognitive architectures is also examined, revealing promising directions for advancing artificial intelligence (AI). Key challenges and future research priorities are outlined, emphasizing the need for continued refinement to better align LLMs with human cognition. Overall, the review offers a perspective on the current state and future potential of LLMs in enhancing understanding of both AI and human intelligence.

We have used AlphaGalileo since its foundation but frankly we need it more than ever now to ensure our research news is heard across Europe, Asia and North America. As one of the UK’s leading research universities we want to continue to work with other outstanding researchers in Europe. AlphaGalileo helps us to continue to bring our research story to them and the rest of the world.

AlphaGalileo has helped us more than double our reach at SciDev.Net. The service has enabled our journalists around the world to reach the mainstream media with articles about the impact of science on people in low- and middle-income countries, leading to big increases in the number of SciDev.Net articles that have been republished.
