Running from November 11-17 and led by Science Communication and Engagement Officer, Eimear Ferguson, this year’s programme promises an incredible range of experiences for all ages across Ireland. From immersive farm tours to interactive workshops, there’s something for everyone—whether you're fascinated by plant health, intrigued by microbes, or eager to explore the science behind your favourite foods and farming practices. Science Week 2024 in Teagasc is set to captivate minds and celebrate the science shaping our future!
Here's a glimpse into what’s happening throughout the week:
Monday, November 11 – Future Food Science (Ashtown, Dublin): Dive into the world of food science! This interactive event invites Transition Year students to learn how data reveals our food preferences and explore innovations in food quality, packaging, and nutrition through an engaging expert ‘speed meet’ and lab tours.
Tuesday, November 12 – Ewe Want to Know More About Sheep? (Athenry, County Galway): Secondary school students are welcomed to Teagasc Athenry for an in-depth look at sheep farming science. Topics include reproductive health, parasite management, and sustainable grassland practices.
Wednesday, November 13 – Vision of Research Photography Exhibition (Oak Park, Carlow): Celebrate the creativity of Teagasc’s researchers at this visual journey showcasing impactful research in agriculture and food science through stunning photography. Open to everyone aged 12+.
Wednesday, November 13 – Junior Farm Walk (Moorepark, Cork): Young students will experience farm life firsthand, exploring how milking works, understanding pig farming’s importance, and discovering the science behind healthy calves and nutritious grass.
Thursday, November 14 – Ferment-ED Workshop (Athenry, County Galway): Join Teagasc food scientist Dr. John Leech and learn all about the world of fermentation! With demonstrations and insights from kombucha experts, this event uncovers the delicious science behind foods like yogurt, bread, and sauerkraut.
Thursday, November 14 – School Science Quiz (Moorepark, Cork): 5th and 6th class students will test their science knowledge in a thrilling quiz covering food production, environmental topics, and animal science. It’s a friendly competition with prizes up for grabs!
Saturday, November 16 – Science at the Marina (Cork City): This vibrant, all-ages event at Cork’s Marina Market features Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) activities, interactive demos, and engaging talks on microbiomes, virtual reality, food science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and more. No booking required – come and go as you please!
Saturday, November 16 – Can My Plants Catch the Flu? (An Gairdín Beo, County Carlow): Discover the fascinating world of plant health with Teagasc scientist Marta Niedzicka, who will delve into how plants stay strong, thrive, and resist ‘illness.’ Ideal for adults and curious children aged 12+.
