Parts for a Robot Called Fedor Created at the SUSU Laboratory of Mechanical Engineering

The Laboratory of Mechanical Engineering of South Ural State University creates amazing, breakthrough solutions for the industry not only of our country, but for the whole world. Partners and customers of the laboratory set technologically challenging and unexpected tasks for their employees. For example, to design the details for the upright robot.

    «A few businesses require services of a technological character: writing management programs, choosing instruments, or optimization. Other businesses need to prepare parts for creating specific details for existing machines. For ChTZ-URALTRAK we are making engine cylinder pistons, for Turbina SKB we are making impeller wheels (wheels for a compressor) for gas-turbine equipment and turbocompressors», says the head of the laboratory, Pavel Samoylovskikh, «For Androidnaya Technika NGO, we are creating parts for orthograde robots. For example, one of the results of our partnerships is various details needed for the robot Fedor, who was created for space flight. The staff of our laboratory took part in creating both parts for this robot and a set of targets that the robot shoots at».

The specialists of NGO "Androidnaya Technika" created one of the most advanced robots for saving people in the framework of the project of the Advanced Studies Foundation. The world-class robotic complex (RTC) is designed to save people, fly into space and solve other urgent problems. It has no analogues, all its details are designed and developed by Russian specialists in the drawings. The mechanisms have a unique and complex design, in connection with which each component required an individual order and is single in production.

Development of the functional for this RTC is a promising direction of the consortium of Russian universities and industrial enterprises in the Chelyabinsk region. Anthropomorphic robot FEDOR (full name - Final Experimental Demonstration Object of Research) is designed to wade through the rubble of a destroyed building on foot or even crawl, find the victim and provide him with first aid - at least, deliver water, inject pain medication and organize communication. Control of the RTC can be carried out in copy, supervisory and autonomous modes.

The modern equipment installed in the laboratory of Mechanical Engineering helps to complete any difficult task.

    «There is an interactive class formed at our laboratory which is equipped with training emulators for distributed computing systems of computerized numerical control (CNC) from such firms as Siemens Sinumerik and Fanuc. These software-hardware complexes allow us to emulate CNC systems and study methods of numerical programming virtually. In addition, we have high-tech small-scale lathes and milling processing centers with a CNC where it is possible to try out methods for processing materials visually», says Pavel Samoylovskikh.

Students can see all the processes of materials processing on the emulators and stands. The main equipment complex solves issues of creating a wide spectrum of high-accuracy and high-tech prototypes for Russian mechanical engineering businesses.

 «We work in cooperation with other SUSU laboratories. Besides, the Laboratory of Mechanical Engineering offers reverse-engineering services: the study of prototypes with the goal of understanding the principles of how it works and the creation of objects with analogous functions without direct copying. This is done with the goal of import substitution for hi-tech products», says the head of the laboratory.

Prototypes created by the laboratory have a large range of use. Their creations are in-demand in the metallurgical and mechanical engineering fields and are used by researchers for academic research.

  «The laboratory has the technical capabilities to process any materials: conductive materials of any hardness and chemical makeup, polymer materials. In terms of mechanical processing, we have the capabilities to process materials from carbon steel, stainless steel alloys, aluminum alloys, nonferrous materials. In addition, we process heat-proof and hard-to-cut allows. We have experience processing both silver and gold, » says Pavel Samoylovskikh.

One more area of work for the Laboratory of Mechanical Engineering is teaching outside specialists in the interactive classes. Mechanical engineering specialists in the Chelyabinsk region can take courses for professional training here. Any person, even those without experience or education in the technology of programming CNC systems can take courses which are held by highly qualified SUSU teachers.

The SUSU laboratory’s main partners and clients are large manufacturing businesses in the Chelyabinsk region and throughout Russia such as Turbina SKB, ChTZ-URALTRAK, Biomorphniye Roboty, Metran, and many others.
