Who we are
Since its foundation by the UK's Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council in 1998, AlphaGalileo has successfully promoted European research in the world by supporting the communication between the scientists, journalists and the public.
The funding of AlphaGalileo has been secured by the European Commission and the governments of France, Germany and the United Kingdom, with support of research and science promotion bodies in Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.
Since 2003, the service has been operating as an independent not-for-profit company, the AlphaGalileo Foundation. It's been founded by a combination of subscriptions, government grants, commercial sponsorship and advertising.
The Foundation now is governed by Company Members, who are similar to Trustees. The Members appoint the Board of Directors who manage the company on a day-to-day basis. In delivering the service, the Foundation’s Board is advised by a Steering Group consisting initially of the national partners from the previous European Commission supported project.
The Foundation believes that communication of scientific research is fundamental to the creation of a knowledge based society in Europe. The Foundation's activities are endorsed by Action 1 of the European Commission's Science & Society Action Plan.
AlphaGalileo Foundation has offices in London and Brussels and regularly attends events and conferences throughout Europe.
In 2005, the Foundation launched the Communiqué initiative to promote the creation of a dedicated research media service to support European research in the 21st century. For more information, see www.communique-initiative.org
Over the years of its activities, AlphaGalileo has become an expert in promoting European research worldwide, being used every day by research and media partners in 85 countries, securing a reliable and fast communication between the science, the media and the people.
