Who we are

Governance

The Foundation is governed by Company Members, who are similar to Trustees.

The Members are:

  • Professor Salvator Roberto Amendolia, High Energy physicist and Scientific Attaché at the Italian Embassy in London, Italy
  • Professor Gilbert Balavoine, Retired researcher and diplomat, France
  • Professor Enric Banda, Director of the Catalonian Foundation for Research and Innovation (Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació), Spain
  • Professor Burgess, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Leicester and Chair of the UK's Higher Education Funding Council's Quality Assessment Committee, UK
  • Professor Colin Blakemore, Waynflete Professor of Physiology and Director of the Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience, University of Oxford, UK
  • Dr Ulrich Breuer, Head of the Department for Scientific-Technical Planning at Research Centre Jülich GmbH), Germany

The Members appoint the Board of Directors which manages the company, staff and their activities on a day-to-day basis.

The Directors are:

Peter Green, Managing Director

Peter Green has worked in advertising and public relations for over 25 years. From the early 1970's he worked as a government publicity and press officer for scientific and technical departments. He has been at the forefront of efforts to introducing digital media to communications work. His final two government posts were as Head of Publishing and Publicity at the Natural Resources Institute, the UK's tropical agricultural research establishment, and Head of Information at the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council. His international experience includes film–making in Eastern Europe, the chairmanship of an international publishing initiative and membership of an European Space Agency publicity task force.

Whilst at PPARC he created the AlphaGalileo research news service. In 2003 he established AlphaGalileo Foundation as an independent not–for–profit company. He is now working with European colleagues on the Communiqué initiative to enhance the role and performance of the European research community's media liaison work. Peter is a Board Member of Euroscience.

The Directors are:

Derek Nelson, Business Director

Derek Nelson followed a career with the BBC and a leading independent UK television company, with a period as a broadcast media consultant for the European Space Agency. He established an independent science TV channel including seeing it through an IPO. He has worked as Chief Operating Officer for several new media ventures and specialises in repositioning and business development as well as media operations. From 2002 he has worked with several television and internet companies across Europe.

Derek combines his media experience with a degree in computer science. He has provided advice to AlphaGalileo from its creation.

An Advisory Council consisting of representatives of senior European research bodies provides general guidance to the Foundation.The Advisory Council consists of:

Members of the AlphaGalileo Steering Group are also members of the Advisory Council. The Steering Group represents funders and other stakeholders. It provides advice on the management and operation of the AlphaGalileo service.
