Earthscan to Publish New Practical Guide to Reducing your Carbon Footprint

12 June 2008 Earthscan

Earthscan, UK – 'The Climate Diet' is the must-have guide to the most important ‘diet’ ever – cutting out the excess greenhouse gas emissions from your lifestyle. It explains climate change concepts, problems and solutions in ways that anyone can easily understand. Short, readable, actionable, this thoroughly researched guide will help you cut your carbon ‘calories’ – and save on your food and energy bills!

Says Harrington, author of The Climate Diet, published this week by Earthscan,

“Numerous studies show that most successful dieters take a slow, gradual approach to changing their unhealthy behaviour. Going cold turkey or practising extreme self-denial of the things you love is rarely a successful way to lose weight – or to cut the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for which we are each responsible1. Each family has its own unique circumstances, and we all have different values and interests. There are so many ways to slash your climate-harming emissions! Pick the ones that are the most comfortable for you but still bring measurable environmental benefits.”

The book is being published in conjunction with the launch of a Climate Diet website www.climatediet.com (a UK version www.climatediet.co.uk is currently in production), which offers advice, hints and fun facts to help get started on your climate diet.

The author is also developing a web based carbon calculator that will allow people from six different countries, including the UK, to calculate their carbon footprint room by room (and cost savings) in a similar way to the calculations made in the book.

Michael MacCracken, Chief Scientist for the Climate Change Programmes, Climate Institute, Washington D.C. says of the book,

“Understanding that global warming is real and must be dealt with is a critical first step, but this does not fix the problem. 'The Climate Diet' is filled with practical advice on want to do next – how to reduce the climate change our children will have to endure, and how, in many cases, to save money while doing so.”
