Routledge to Publish First Porn Studies Journal

30 April 2013 Taylor & Francis

Routledge (Taylor & Francis Group) have announced that from 2014 they are to publish a new journal devoted to the study of pornography. Porn Studies, to be edited by Professor Feona Attwood of Middlesex University and Dr Clarissa Smith of the University of Sunderland, will be the first dedicated, international, peer-reviewed journal to critically explore those cultural products and services designated as pornographic and their cultural, economic, historical, institutional, legal and social contexts.

Pornography is a growing area of study within a range of academic fields and this will be reflected in the interdisciplinary nature of Porn Studies, which will publish research by scholars working in areas including cultural studies, film, media and sociology. It will draw on labour and industry studies, where this focuses on sex work, and also law and criminology as these relate to the regulation of sex and the media.

Professor Attwood outlined why this new journal is needed; “The critical study of pornography is growing and there are an increasing number of conferences, articles and PhD projects in this area. However there is currently no dedicated outlet for work of this kind. We are confident that Porn Studies will attract significant high-quality contributions from around the globe.”

Routledge journals are world renowned for their scholarly engagement with pornography and sexuality studies, having already established a number of high-profile titles that will complement Porn Studies, including Early Popular Visual Culture; Feminist Media Studies; and Journal of Homosexuality.

Announcement of this new publication has been warmly welcomed by scholars in the field. Julie Peakman of Birkbeck College commented, “We have waited a long time for an academic journal that treats the subject of the representation of human sexuality with the seriousness it deserves. I look forward to a lively and disciplined debate across different disciplines”.
