Sport Matters: Politics, Identity and Culture
04 July 2012
Taylor & Francis
“There is something about sports in particular and arguably football, that makes public and makes visible some of the racial tensions and racial animosities that lie just beneath the surface within the European public sphere.”
In a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies, Ben Carrington, of the University of Texas, Austin, offers the wider ethnic and racial studies community examples of some of the most innovative work currently being done on the race-sport nexus.
According to his introduction to the special issue:
“These sports-related incidents highlight and bring to the fore, arguably more powerfully than any other cultural form, the complexity of contemporary racisms and the potential of (and limits to) popular forms of anti-racism. Sport, and in this instance football, opened up a rare public space in Britain to discuss what did and did not constitute racism, the importance of racist intent, the difficulties of contested national, linguistic and geographical interpretations of race (and the related problem of reducing racism to speech acts alone), and the possibility of racism residing and being reproduced even amidst avowedly cosmopolitan cultures and work spaces.”
Ben Carrington argues “this context demands that scholars from across the social sciences devote more energy and time to seriously considering the particular importance of sports to the ways in which ideas about race circulate through social structures and mediate social relations.”
