Stephen Lawrence Gallery: The Present is a Point Just Passed

07 June 2012 — 11 July 2012 Greenwich, University of

The Stephen Lawrence Gallery’s new show, The Present is a Point Just Passed, looks at the Olympic Games by examining the intricacies of time.

The exhibition will include works by Martin John Callanan, Jan Dibbets, and Jonty Semper, as well as seismograms from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and images from the Lick Galaxy Catalogue.

The exhibition is curated by Lizzie Hughes and will run from Thursday 7 June to Wednesday 11 July. She says: “We’re in the lead up to the Olympic Games, where athletes will be striving to surpass all previous achievements in their field, and records will be broken by a fraction of a second. The Present is a Point Just Passed brings together art works and artefacts that give a tangible presence to defined moments of time.

“Some works carefully reposition empirical data and look at incidents of historical significance, others use banal observations and puerile gestures to render forever noteworthy otherwise unremarkable passing moments.”

Lizzie Hughes graduated in 2002 from The Slade School of Fine Art with a Master of Fine Arts. In 2010 she completed a five year residency at the Acme Fire Station Building in London, a charity formed by artists in 1972, which provides artists with affordable studio and living space.
