Universities at Medway Boat Race

19 May 2012 — 19 May 2012 Greenwich, University of

The 2012 Medway Boat Race, organised by Universities at Medway Students’ Association (UMSA), takes place on Saturday 19 May.

Students are preparing to renew sporting rivalries in the sixth annual Universities at Medway Boat Race.

This year’s event takes place on Saturday 19 May. Organised by Universities at Medway Students’ Association (UMSA), which represents all students at the shared Medway Campus, it is free to attend and all are welcome.

Launched in 2007, the event is a firm fixture in Medway’s social and sporting calendar. Rowers compete against their fellow students from the three universities sharing the Medway Campus at Chatham Maritime: the University of Greenwich, the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University.

Both women’s and men’s races will again take place this year, with rowers tackling a testing course of approximately 3.3 kilometres, between Cuxton and The Esplanade, Rochester. Spectators can watch the races from the open area on The Esplanade, near Hathaway Court, which also marks the finishing line.

Free sports massages, rowing coaching and interactive games are on offer for everyone on the day and there will also be live music and refreshments.

The event opens at noon with an opening universities challenge race. The women’s race is at 1pm, which sees a combined Universities at Medway crew take on the University of Kent. The men’s race follows at 2pm, with a three-way contest between Kent, Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church. The trophies and medals, created by renowned Medway artist Paula Groves, will be presented in a ceremony at 3pm.

UMSA’s Activities Co-ordinator Claire Dicker says: “The race is a popular campus tradition and a great day out for people in the towns. There is always a good atmosphere with everyone cheering on their team and the sporting rivalry adds to the sense of occasion.

“Lifting one of the magnificent trophies in front of the crowd is a moment that the winning crews will never forget.”

Student rowers have been trained by coaches at Medway Towns Rowing Club. The event is being sponsored by Rochester Bridge Trust, Chatham Maritime Trust and Southern Water.
