Terms & Conditions of Use
When you register, you are registering as a personal user of AlphaGalileo. Access to registration areas is via your username and password.
We allow you access to the registration areas of the site on the basis that:
- your user name and password are personal to you and may not be used by anyone else
- you will not do anything which would assist anyone who is not a registered user to gain access to any registration area of AlphaGalileo
- you do not maliciously create additional usernames for the purpose of abusing the functionality of the site, or other users; nor do you seek to pass yourself off as another user by adopting a similar username
- you comply with these terms and conditions.
If, for any reason, we believe that you have not complied with these requirements, we may, at our discretion, cancel your access to the registration areas of AlphaGalileo immediately and without giving you any advance notice.
If we wish to bring the agreement to an end, we will do so by emailing you at the address you have registered stating that the agreement has terminated. The agreement will terminate and your user name and password will become invalid immediately.
2. Use of material appearing on AlphaGalileo
For the purposes of this agreement, "material" means material including, without limitation, text, video, graphics and sound material, published on the AlphaGalileo website, whether copyright AlphaGalileo Foundation or a third party.
You may download and print extracts from the material and make copies of these for your own personal and non-commercial use only for reproduction in all forms of media.
You are not allowed to download or print the material, or extracts from it, in a systematic or regular manner or otherwise so as to create a database in electronic or paper form comprising all or part of the material appearing on AlphaGalileo.
You must not reproduce any part of AlphaGalileo or the material or transmit it to or store it in any other website or disseminate any part of the material in any other form, unless we have indicated that you may do so.
We may be prepared to allow you to distribute or reproduce parts of AlphaGalileo or the material, under certain conditions. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to apply for permission to do so.
By accepting these terms and conditions of use, you confirm that you will respect any embargo set on the news items published in the website. An embargo prevents publication of material before the date and time specified, whilst allowing the media to undertake background research and prepare their articles or pieces. Breaking an embargo may lead to the temporary or permanent removal of access to the service. Contributors who assist the media in breaking their own embargoes or those of others may also lose their access to the service, as above.
3. Disclaimer of liability
To the extent permitted at law, we do not accept any responsibility for any statement in the material. You must not rely on any statement we have published on AlphaGalileo without first taking specialist professional advice. Nothing in the material is provided for any specific purpose or at the request of any particular person.
For the avoidance of confusion, we will not be liable for any loss caused as a result of your doing, or not doing, anything as a result of viewing, reading or listening to the material or any part of it (except for death or personal injury attributable to our negligence/to the extent permitted at law).
You can access other sites via links from AlphaGalileo. These sites are not under our control and we are not responsible in any way for any of their contents.
We give no warranties of any kind concerning AlphaGalileo or the material. In particular, we do not warrant that AlphaGalileo or any of its contents is virus free. You must take your own precautions in this respect as we accept no responsibility for any infection by virus or other contamination or by anything which has destructive properties.
4. Third party material
You will see advertising material submitted by third parties on AlphaGalileo. Individual advertisers are solely responsible for the content of advertising material which they submit to us, including ensuring that it complies with relevant legislation. We accept no responsibility for the content of advertising material, including, without limitation, any error, omission or inaccuracy therein.
If you wish to advertise on AlphaGalileo, please email email@example.com
5. Data protection
If you have indicated on the registration form that you wish to receive direct marketing material, your personal details will be included in a database compiled for direct marketing purposes and this data may be transferred outside the European Economic Area (EEA). From time to time, you may receive direct marketing information from us or from third parties.
If you have indicated that you wish to receive email updates only from AlphaGalileo, your personal details will be included on a database compiled for this specific purpose.
If you have indicated that you wish to receive direct marketing material or email updates from AlphaGalileo but subsequently change your mind, you should notify the duty editor at firstname.lastname@example.org. As soon after this as is reasonably practicable, we will remove your name from the relevant database.
At AlphaGalileo we collect different types of information about our users for three main reasons:
- to help us to improve the services we offer
- to provide personalised services unique to individual users
- to use anonymous details about our users to sell appropriate advertising space on the site.
Where we collect registration information from an individual, we will never share that individual's information with a third party, including an advertiser, without that user's explicit permission.
If you apply for and receive a contributor's log-in, certain personal details will be available online to certain other users as follows:
The Address Book is only available to registered contributors and journalists. Guests cannot view the Address Book. Contributors who have indicated that they wish to post content to the site will have the following personal details published online in the Address Book. This information is taken from the registration form. Registered contributors can update this information at any time using the link 'change your details':
- Organisation Logo
- Organisation Name
- Organisation Address
- Organisation Website
- Organisation Description (mission statement)
- Organisation Type (e.g. Higher Education Institution)
- Contributor's Name
- Contributor's Job Title
- Conrtibutor's E-mail Address
- Contributor's Telephone Number
We do not publish personal details about journalists registered. We do publish a list of the names of media organisations registered in the About AlphaGalileo section of the site.
We will respect your email privacy. Save as disclosed above, we will not pass on any individual user details (including your email address) unless we have your prior consent. Otherwise, we will only share anonymous aggregate statistics about our users, sales and traffic patterns with our advertisers.
Please note that we reserve the right to access and disclose individually identifiable information to comply with applicable laws and lawful government requests, to operate our systems properly and to protect both ourselves and our users.
The AlphaGalileo site relies on cookies to handle the logon of registered users and to enforce security. The cookie identifies you as a logged on and legitimate user of the service. We do this to safeguard access privileges e.g. embargoed items are only seen by journalists.
Cookies are small files sent by the Web server to your machine. There are two types. One is returned to the server and provides simple information about the machine that has logged on; sometimes known as a session identifier. We use these session identifier cookies to handle the log-on of registered users and to check access privileges to embargoed items. If you wish, you can set your browser to auto-accept cookies which are only sent back to the server itself; in this way, you will not be prompted when you log-in to AlphaGalileo (or to other web sites which use similar cookies), but you will have the option of rejecting cookies which are sent to other servers (for example those for adverts on web sites).
The other type of cookie is the one people find disturbing. This stays on your hard disk to provide information to the server when you access that site the next time. It can for example be used for advertising purposes or to generate junk email. AlphaGalileo does not use these cookies.
These terms may be varied from time to time. Please ensure that you review these terms and conditions regularly as you will be deemed to have accepted a variation if you continue to use the site after it has been posted.
9. Force majeure
Although we will do our best to provide constant, uninterrupted access to AlphaGalileo, we do not guarantee this. We accept no responsibility or liability for any interruption or delay.
10. Governing Law & Jurisdiction
This agreement is governed by English law and the parties agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English courts.
