Meteosat monitors vegetation cover in African drought region
19 August 2011
European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT)
Data from the Land Surface Analysis Satellite Application Facility (LSA SAF) archive, based on Meteosat Second Generation, are tracing the evolution of the fraction of vegetation cover (FVC) in the Horn of Africa continuously.
In the figure, at the peak of the spring rainy season, FVC shows soil erosion between 2007 and 2011 due to the persistent reduction in precipitation since 2003. The images show daily averages on 5 May 2007, left, and 5 May 2011, right, with red indicating very dry ground, green intermediate values, and blue very high FVC (fractional vegetation).
